An 83-year-old SUV driver crashed into another vehicle after swerving to miss a pedestrian in Astoria before slamming into a Citi Bike station and a laundromat on 28th Avenue.

A jaywalker allegedly caused a chain-reaction motor vehicle collision in broad daylight in Astoria on Tuesday that injured three people and left an SUV smashed into a business establishment after crashing through a Citi Bike rack on 28th Avenue.
Police from the 114th Precinct in Astoria and the FDNY responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian stuck in front of 43-17 28th Ave. just before 4:20 p.m. on June 9. Upon arriving on the scene, officers were informed that an 83-year-old motorist who was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV traveling southbound on 44th Street had made a right turn onto 28th Avenue when the chaos began.
The elderly driver allegedly swerved to miss a 39-year-old man who walked into the street outside of a marked crosswalk at the intersection, according to authorities. The senior then crashed into a Ford SUV, driven by a 29-year-old woman.

The Lexus SUV struck the Citi Bike station, jumped the curb onto the sidewalk and collided with a 58-year-old man before slamming into the exterior wall of a laundromat at 43-17 28th Ave., police said.

The Lexus driver and the two pedestrians sustained minor injuries and EMS transported them to Elmhurst Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

There have been no arrests or summonses issued and the investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing.
