The National Weather has placed all of New York City under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. on Friday night.

High temperatures are expected to hit 95 degrees today, June 11, and 94 degrees on Friday, with a heat index forecast at about 100 both days. There also is a chance of thunderstorms into Thursday night.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for all of New York City and Westchester County through 11 p.m. on June 11.

New York City’s Emergency Management office has a link to a map of open cooling centers throughout Queens at tinyurl.com/mv5jumeu, along with tips on how people can protect themselves from the effects and dangers of hot weather.

The city’s outdoor safety tips recommend that people:

• Avoid strenuous physical activity;

• drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty;

• stay in the shade and out of direct sun;

• wear light, loose-fitting clothes;

• put a hat on to protect your face and head;

• use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher;

• limit outdoor activities to early morning and late evening hours; and

• avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine or sugar.

As for indoor tips: 

• Set your air conditioning unit to at least 78 degrees or “low cool” to be safe, comfortable, and save money;

• close window shades or curtains;

• try not to use your stove and oven;

• take a cool shower or bath, not a freezing one; 

• drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty; and

• avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar.
