Powerful thunderstorms are expected to besiege the New York City area Thursday afternoon, pounding the tri-state with damaging straight-line winds, hail, and potentially flooding downpours.

The worst weather is expected between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., unfortunate timing for the evening commute.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for parts of New York (including the five boroughs) and New Jersey, among other states, until midnight.
