Serena Williams‘ doubles campaign at Queen’s Club came to an early end on Thursday (11 June) after her tennis doubles partner, Victoria Mboko, withdrew from their quarter-final with a left knee injury.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, 44, made her competitive return to the sport on Tuesday, 1,375 days after her last match. Williams and Mboko upset third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in their opening match.
Mboko, 19, hurt her knee during her singles match against Karolína Plíšková on Wednesday. Trailing 6-2, 3-4, the Canadian went down clutching her knee and retired in tears. The withdrawal sends Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund through to the semi-finals of the doubles without playing.
