The MTA announced it will be equipping the Q8 bus route in Queens with Automated Camera Enforcement, with the 60-day warning period set to begin on Monday, June 15.
Q8’s addition will mark 63 total bus routes covering around 810 route miles and over 1,900 buses in New York City with Automated Camera Enforcement. Intended to improve bus service by enhancing compliance with existing traffic rules, Automated Camera Enforcement already benefits more than 1 million riders on an average weekday.
Automated Camera Enforcement is also meant to allow for buses to run faster, safer and more reliably. This program, along with the addition of dedicated bus lanes and street upgrades, has helped improve bus speeds along the full length of routes with Automated Camera Enforcement. Some segments on these routes have achieved gains of close to 30%.
This program is being administered in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation and the New York City Department of Finance. When violations are captured on camera, the resulting video, images, license plate information, location and time stamp details are securely transmitted to the Department of Transportation for review by City employees and processing thereafter.
Launched in 2024, the Automated Camera Enforcement program has shown measurable success across all five boroughs, improving bus speeds, reducing traffic accidents and bus stops clear.
