Today’s Big Stories
1. MGM’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers withdraws application for state casino license
MGM’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers has sent a letter to the Gaming Commission indicating that it is dropping out of the race for a state gaming license.
The company was planning to spend more than $2 billion to expand the existing casino into a full-fledged resort.
2. Forest Hills homeowners sue city, alleging ‘seizure’ of private streets for concerts
A Forest Hills homeowners’ association is taking the city to court, claiming the NYPD has illegally commandeered its private streets during events at the neighborhood’s namesake concert venue.
The Forest Hills Gardens Corporation, which represents homeowners in the historic Queens community, filed the federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York on Monday.
3. Education officials tout efforts to expand access for multilingual learners
Forty-four percent of New York City public school students speak a language at home other than English, with 156 different languages spoken across the nation’s largest school system.
Serving those children isn’t always easy — and in a new report, a 50-member advisory council commissioned by the Department of Education found some shortcomings, which top education officials readily recognized today.
4. Newborns at four city hospitals to start getting ‘baby boxes’ this month
Four city hospitals will start sending newborns and their families home with boxes full of “essential” supplies, officials said today.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County and NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst will begin distributing “NYC Baby Boxes” later this month, Mayor Eric Adams said.
5. Political Buzz on the Road: Staten Island
“Mornings On 1” has been hitting the road ahead of the mayoral election to look at some of the main issues for voters across the five boroughs. The citywide road trip concludes with NY1’s Pat Kiernan, Ayana Harry, Bob Hardt and Courtney Gross crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Staten Island.
Public safety was a focal point in the 2021 mayoral election, but this election has largely brought attention to the cost of living and affordability in New York City. So what message will resonate on Staten Island?
As the government shutdown entered its 14th day today, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle continued to be miles apart with no consensus in sight.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., continued to blame Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for “inflicting untold pain on the American people” by refusing to back the Republicans’ funding proposal while Democrats ramped up their attacks on President Donald Trump and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought for using the shutdown to fire federal workers.
The fragile ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war was tested today as the slower-than-hoped return of deceased hostages from Gaza prompted an Israeli military agency to declare a “violation” of the truce agreement that it would respond to by halving the number of trucks allowed to bring humanitarian aid into the devastated territory.
Complex issues remain a day after widespread jubilation over the return to Israel of the last 20 living hostages held in Gaza and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange.
