NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — Over 60 people were arrested and at least 10 officers were injured following Knicks championship celebrations across New York City, according to the NYPD.
Police said large crowds of unruly fans began to form at various places north of Madison Square Garden between Fifth and Ninth Avenues and across the city during the game on Saturday night.
Arrests and charges following Knicks’ win
Police said a total of 63 people were arrested overnight in connection with the celebrations.
Charges included assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration.
A 17‑year‑old was shot at 43rd Street and Broadway. Officers transported the victim to a hospital because an ambulance could not reach the scene due to dense crowds. A firearm was recovered, and three people of interest were taken into custody in separate incidents, according to police.
Police also reported four slashings.
Five school buses were set on fire or destroyed. Police said the buses were being used to transport people from Manhattan to MetLife Stadium for World Cup events.
Police also said five NYPD vehicles were heavily damaged as people struck them with bats and jumped on them, shattering windshields and windows. Several personal vehicles were also destroyed.
Multiple physical fights broke out, and several streets and avenues were shut down for hours as crowds refused to disperse.
Ten NYPD officers were injured, including one who was punched in the face and another struck with a glass bottle, police said.
