The Gist

Olivia Wilde was photographed outside The Bowery Hotel in New York City wearing a head-to-toe black ensemble.

Her look featured an oversized blazer, a shirtless black vest, dramatic wide-leg trousers, and sleek black sunglasses.

The monochromatic outfit broke one of summer fashion’s longest-standing rules with all-black dressing.

While much of celebrity fashion is currently revolving around easy summer dresses and every shade of butter yellow imaginable, Olivia Wilde is taking a different approach. The actress stepped out in New York City this week looking completely unfazed by the season’s usual style playbook, trading breezy whites and vacation-ready colors for something considerably moodier.

Photographed outside The Bowery Hotel, Wilde arrived in an outfit that fashion people have long considered a year-round uniform: head-to-toe black tailoring. By wearing the dark hue, the director makes the choice to break one of summer dressing’s most enduring rules.

The actress built the outfit around a relaxed black blazer layered over a matching waistcoat from OFFICINE GÉNÉRALE. Rather than styling the vest over a button-down shirt, she wore it on its own, creating a deep neckline that gave the tailored pieces a more effortless feel that downtown New York City is known for. The styling kept the look from veering too corporate and added a subtle touch of eveningwear energy to an otherwise classic combination.

Black has a reputation for feeling too heavy once temperatures rise, which is why the color tends to disappear in favor of lighter hues every June. However, Wilde’s latest look is proof that the shade never really goes away (nor should it).

She continued the monochromatic theme with an oversized pair of wide-leg trousers that nearly skimmed the sidewalk. The dramatic proportions echoed the relaxed fit of the blazer, creating a silhouette that felt intentionally loose rather than sharply structured.

Her accessories were kept minimal and echoed the polished nature of her attire. Wilde added angular black sunglasses and delicate stud earrings, then carried a small white canvas tote printed with oversized black lettering. The bag provided the only real contrast in the outfit, breaking up the sea of black without disrupting its clean, minimalist feel.

While many celebrities are embracing color this season, Wilde’s outfit serves as a reminder that an all-black moment remains fashion’s most reliable fallback and a classic style for a reason.
