WRGB Studios-Schenectady, NY — New York State is expected to lose at least one Congressional seat by the year 2030.
The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission convening this week, featuring a budget approval and a presentation regarding the State’s population changes by Co-Executive Directors Karen Blatt and Douglas Breakell.
The data coming from the American Community Survey, providing a picture of where people are going. Overall New York with 0.6 percent of population loss, though a deeper look showing growth happening in the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley between 2020-2025. New York City counties saw the biggest losses statewide.
“For those of us in this region, we’ll end up with more representation in Albany relative to other parts of the state. So, some ways that’s good news for us locally,” Christopher Mann, Research Director at The Center for Election Innovation & Research says. “For most of the last 250 years, or almost that, that we’ve had districts here in New York, they’ve kind of been migrating from upstate into New York City, but in the last couple decades that’s reversed. More districts will shift this direction, so you have to move the lines, even if there’s none of the partisan stuff that we’re talking about with redistricting, just population shift means that it has to go in that direction.”
