Dominic Colón’s The War I Know will receive two free public readings at Pregones/PRTT in the Bronx June 29 and 30. Rudi Goblen is directing.
The play was the inaugural recipient of the GLAAD-sponsored Write It Out Prize. It follows a Bronx family navigating the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and ’90s through the eyes of Eggie, a young gay Latine boy coming to understand both the world around him and his own identity.
The reading cast will include Wilson Cruz (My So-Called Life, Star Trek: Discovery), Gregory Diaz IV (In the Heights, Vampires vs. The Bronx), Haskiri Velazquez (Saved by the Bell), Yadira Guevara-Prip (A House of Dynamite, Supernatural), Antonio Ortiz “AJAY” (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), and Nyseli Vega (Hell’s Kitchen).
“Dominic has written a deeply personal and profoundly moving play about a chapter of Bronx history that continues to resonate today. … At a moment when so many are grappling with questions of identity, belonging, The War I Know reminds us of the power of storytelling to preserve history and build empathy,” said Liam Lonegan, artistic director of Egg & Spoon Theatre Collective, in a statement.
Presented as part of Egg & Spoon’s INCUBATE NYC initiative, the project is being developed in partnership with community organizations focused on LGBTQIA+ advocacy, HIV/AIDS awareness, and Bronx community engagement.
