Civil rights groups have raised concerns for months now over “buffer zone” laws both in the City Council and in the state Legislature.
Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill passed by state lawmakers that gives police the power to create security perimeters around houses of worship in which demonstrations will not be allowed.
In the city, a similar law passed. But a second bill proposing security perimeters outside of educational institutions was vetoed by the mayor, who cited concerns over the language of the legislation.
The council is now considering an amended version of that bill.
