New Yorkers looking to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday with live music, barbecue, family-friendly fun and history should look no further than their local park.
The New York City Parks Department is celebrating the end of slavery in the U.S. with a series of free events hosted in green spaces across the city this Friday and Saturday.

In Central Park, New Yorkers can head to W. 81st St. and Central Park West on Friday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to discover the history of Seneca Village. The event will shed light on the 19th-century enclave, which stretched between W. 82nd and W. 89th Sts. before the park was built, and was once the city’s largest community of African-American property owners.
St. Nicholas Park will host the West Harlem Summer Jazz Festival at the James Baldwin Lawn, at 135th St. and St. Nicholas Ave., on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Bryant Park Picnic Performances will present The Unsung Collective “Starburst” at the Bryant Park lawn on Friday from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Historic Harlem Parks will celebrate its Sixth Annual Juneteenth Celebration featuring kids’ jumbo games and music courtesy of DJ Jon Quick at the Jackie Robinson Park bandshell on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Brooklyn

The Audubon Center located in the Boathouse at Prospect Park will host “MAJOR” by Ogemdi Ude, a dance tribute to majorette culture and Black femme legacy, on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Urban Park Rangers are leading a walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park to discuss Brooklyn’s roll in the abolitionist movement. The tour kicks off at Furman and Old Fulton Sts. Friday at 2 p.m.
Dr. John’s Playground in Marine Park will host the Just for Kids Juneteenth Book Event, featuring stories commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Sharpshooters can head to the Queensbridge Park entrance at Vernon Blvd. and 41st St. to try their hands at archery on Friday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Van Cortlandt House Museum in Van Cortlandt Park is hosting an outdoor celebration of Juneteenth at the Enslaved Burial Grounds on Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Wave Hill Public Garden, at 4900 Independence Ave. near W. 249th St., is hosting its Juneteenth Celebration with a free afternoon of family-friendly events on Friday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
