(KTTC) – Communities are celebrating the crowned kings and queens from the most recent Miss Juneteenth Pageant Minnesota.
On Friday, they will be making rounds at community Juneteenth events across the state.
Earlier this month, seven queens and two kings were crowned in different titles. This year’s theme was ‘Rediscovering Our Culture and Redefining Our Freedom’.
Miss Juneteenth is a nonprofit that organizers say is redefining pageantry, with hopes that it will empower and inspire black generations to become confident, poised public speakers.
Beyond the crown, contestants take part in workshops, learn financial literacy and how to overcome mental health challenges, as well as social struggles tied to their differences.
Division five Miss Juneteenth winner, Ebony Wilson-Sinkfield says the pageant is not just about beauty but rather building yourself and showing representation for generations to come.
“We’re able to show who we are in different shades of brown. We’re able to show who we are with different textures of hair,” Sink-field said. “Having a representation in that aspect is what’s beautiful about this pageant and continuing to shed light on the differences and how we show up because none of us are the same. We all are unique in our own ways.”
The state pageant received a proclamation from the city of St. Paul earlier this week for the organization’s mission and impact.
