Officials are still investigating what sparked a riot at a Bronx juvenile detention facility on Sunday evening that left nearly a dozen people injured.
According to sources familiar with the investigation, police were called to the Horizon Juvenile Center, located at 560 Brook Ave., at around 5 p.m. on June 21 after a massive brawl unfolded inside.
A number of teenage detainees allegedly got hold of scalpels that they turned on staff members who attempted to break up the violence, leaving them with slash wounds, the sources said.
Police sources report that both workers and several teens were left bloodied; however, no one suffered life-threatening injuries.
“I just got word my son is fine,” one parent said. “There was no kids, like, really badly hurt,” one parent told CBS News.
Eleven injuries were reported in total. Police remained on the scene for several hours.
The Horizon Juvenile Center is described by the city’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) as a secure detention facility for juvenile offenders. According to the city, the facility has one of the most restrictive security features and does not allow weapons on the premises, not even for guards.
“The situation at Horizon Juvenile Center has been resolved, and the facility is now secured. The safety and security of young people and staff in our secure detention facilities is our top priority,” ACS said in a statement.
