An 18-year-old driver was shot in the arm by an NYPD officer Sunday evening, June 21, 2026, in Fordham Manor after police said a stolen silver Kia Sportage with New Jersey license plates struck a sergeant and other officers during an attempted arrest.
The encounter took place on East Fordham Road between Webster Avenue and Marion Avenue, where officers were investigating a stolen vehicle that had been seen parked in the area. The driver and a sergeant were hospitalized, and a passenger was taken into custody.
The first license plate reader alert came at about 5:35 p.m., when police were notified that the Kia was traveling through Washington Heights in Manhattan. NYPD Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo, commanding officer of Patrol Borough Bronx North, said the SUV had been reported stolen Saturday, June 20, from another area of the Bronx.
A second alert arrived about 10 minutes later and showed the Kia had traveled northwest before moving east across the University Heights Bridge. NYPD Aviation then tracked the vehicle as it moved through the Bronx.
Members of the Community Response Team located the Kia on West Fordham Road as it traveled eastbound across Cedar Avenue. Officers followed it covertly for about one mile until it stopped and a passenger got out.
The Kia continued for about two more blocks and stopped outside 380-382 East Fordham Road at about 5:56 p.m. Six unmarked NYPD vehicles surrounded the parked SUV to keep it from leaving while officers ordered the driver and passenger to get out.
The driver shifted the Kia into reverse while officers were around it, hitting one unmarked police vehicle and multiple officers, according to police. He then put the SUV in drive, turned the wheels to the right and drove into a sergeant, throwing the sergeant to the ground.
Another officer climbed onto a parked vehicle to avoid being struck. Police said the driver continued reversing while the sergeant was on the ground in front of the Kia and other officers remained close to the SUV.
An officer positioned on top of the parked vehicle fired at the driver. The driver was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where police said he was in stable condition.
The sergeant and other NYPD members were transported to local hospitals for treatment of various injuries. Police said those officers were in stable condition.
The driver and passenger were both taken into custody after the incident.
Police said the driver had an earlier 2026 arrest in the same precinct, the 46th Precinct, in a case involving shots fired at another male. That prior incident happened Jan. 24 at 1617 Nelson Avenue in Morris Heights, caused no injury, led to a Feb. 9 arrest and brought charges that included attempted felony assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a firearm.
The driver later posted bail in that earlier case, police said. Investigators had not released the sergeant’s age, and several details remained under investigation, including whether the driver said anything during the encounter, how many officers were involved and whether any weapons were inside the Kia.
The NYPD Force Investigations Division is reviewing the shooting. Police said the incident was captured on body worn camera footage.
