A Minneapolis man is charged after he allegedly stabbed a man on a city bus in Brooklyn Center, leaving doctors to say the victim will likely be permanently paralyzed.

According to a criminal complaint, Metro Transit officers responded on June 17 to a bus fight near Brooklyn Road and 65th Avenue North. Officers later identified 27-year-old Darshawn Turner as the man accused of stabbing another man in the side of the head.

At the scene, officers found a man stabbed in his left temple and bleeding “profusely,” according to court records. Hospital records said doctors performed a craniotomy because of a blood clot in his brain and said he would likely suffer permanent paralysis on at least half his body.

What happened on the bus?

Metro Transit investigators identified Turner after reviewing surveillance footage from the day leading up to the fight.

According to the complaint, Turner was at a liquor store buying alcohol before getting onto the bus. Once on the bus, the man and Turner started fighting. The complaint said Turner later got off the bus and challenged the man to get off too.

At one point, the door started to close, but Turner pried it back open. Court records said that is when Turner stabbed the man in his left temple.

Arrest and charges

The bus driver then closed the rear door and drove away, leaving Turner behind. On June 20, officers arrested Turner and found a knife inside his bag.

In a statement, Turner admitted he got into a fight with the man after the man stared at him. According to court records, Turner also said the man spit on him after he got off the bus, which led to the stabbing.

Turner said he was drunk and did not know what he did with the knife. Court records list two assault charges against him, including first-degree assault causing great bodily harm.

Records also show Turner had an active warrant from 2025 in a case where he allegedly stabbed a man at another Brooklyn Center bus station.

He remains in the Hennepin County Jail and is set to make his first court appearance Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
