According to The Associated Press, with more than 68% of the expected vote in, Valdez had 58.1% of votes, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso had 32.5% and Queens Councilwoman Julie Won had 7.5%
The district includes neighborhoods such as Long Island City, Astoria, Ridgewood, Bushwick, Williamsburg and East New York
According to The Associated Press, with more than 68% of the expected vote in, Valdez had 58.1% of votes, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso had 32.5% and Queens Councilwoman Julie Won had 7.5%.
Valdez, who is part of the Democratic Socialists of America, was elected to the state Assembly in 2024.
She was one of the congressional candidates Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed leading up to the primary.
The district includes neighborhoods such as Long Island City, Astoria, Ridgewood, Bushwick, Williamsburg and East New York.
Reynoso conceded to Valdez Tuesday night.
“Listen, we didn’t win the day this time. None of our efforts were in vain. Every time we speak to a voter, we let another person know that a better tomorrow is possible. And that is invaluable work,” he said to his supporters Tuesday night, also discussing the joy that his campaign brought him.
“Although the results may be disappointing, I still see so many reasons to be joyful and to celebrate,” Reynoso continued.
Last November, Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who has served in Congress since 1993, announced that she will not seek reelection for the district. She endorsed Reynoso in the primary.
“I know that tonight wasn’t the result we wanted, but I couldn’t be prouder of Antonio Reynoso,” Velázquez said. “We have to continue to work to make sure we address the issues of working families.”
