CITYWIDE— CITY COUNCILMEMBER SUSAN ZHUANG HAS INITIATED SEVERAL EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE MEASURES in the wake of uncertainty over the suspension of SNAP benefits.
Last Friday, Oct. 31, Zhuang launched an online Multilingual Food Access Hub to prepare for the expected disruption of benefits and the resulting food insecurity crisis. The website (with a paper pamphlet edition also available) provides a breakdown of the current situation, its impact on a family’s benefits, and ways to find food assistance in the city.
Besides the Food Access Hub, Zhuang is hosting a pop-up food pantry that is expected to serve hundreds of families within her district. She has also coordinated emergency funding, working closely with the mayor’s office to ensure local pantries receive direct support through the Emergency Funding to Community Food Connection Program.
Zhuang, who has prioritized food access in her City Council work, pointed out that her district has a high rate of SNAP reliance, with 22% of families depending on this benefit. Since reopening for constituent services on Monday, her office has already received multiple inquiries from residents worried about their benefits.
