The man arrested by New York State Police in connection with the fatal fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell was arraigned Wednesday morning for violating his parole. However, there have been no further updates from police or Broome County regarding the situation.
There was also an extreme risk protection order filed against Tyler Russell, 24, but the details of the filing are not currently available. The fire killed six people and police are expected to release further details on the identities of the victims at a later time.
The Knights Inn is a hotel frequently used by the Broome County Department of Social Services to house families and individuals experiencing homelessness, but there have been a number of issues with the property. The county paid $734,374 to the hotel between April 2024 and March 2025, according to data from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
Information from a Freedom of Information request shows a history of frequent law enforcement calls to the hotel for a variety of reasons including suspicious activity, harassment, larceny and more. For the month of January 2026, there were 24 dispatch calls to that address, 263 in 2025 and 266 in 2024.
County Executive Jason Garnar was at an event Wednesday morning in Binghamton showcasing a tiny homes pilot project. However, he refused to answer any questions regarding the fire and the use of the hotel by DSS.
