The state Office of Cannabis Management on Thursday announced the launch of its Center of Excellence for Cannabis Care and Health Equity, calling it a first-in-the-nation initiative designed to support healthcare as cannabis use becomes more common across New York.
Announced in Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2026 State of the State, the new center will educate healthcare providers and public health professionals about cannabis. The center “brings together healthcare providers, public health experts and researchers to improve cannabis education and strengthen health outcomes,” according to state’s website dedicated to it.
“Millions of people in New York use cannabis, including many who manage chronic conditions or take other medications. Yet many patients rarely discuss cannabis use with their healthcare providers, and many providers lack trusted information to guide those conversations,” the website states.
The University at Albany and Albany Medical Center are supporting the initiative. Also involved are SUNY Upstate Medical University, Stony Brook Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, CUNY School of Public Health and New York State Office of Mental Health.
“When New York legalized cannabis, we chose a different path than many other states from the beginning,” said John Kagia, executive director of the state Office of Cannabis Management. “Our approach was about more than creating a new market. It’s always been about building a framework rooted in public health, safety, education and equity.”
The office issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop clinician training courses.
