State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez is trading in the state Capitol for the U.S. Capitol.
On Tuesday night, Valdez defeated three other opponents, including Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, City Councilwoman Julie Won and Vichal Kumar.
She is now the Democratic nominee for the 7th Congressional District, which spans parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
Valdez is a democratic socialist who was endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. She is also taking over for longtime Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who has represented the district since 1993.
Valdez joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to talk about her primary win.
“I think now is an opportunity for us to say, ‘We’re going to prioritize rebuilding the labor movement and getting every single worker into a union.’ And that’s going to be priority number one for me when I’m in office,” she said. “And I hope to continue to organize both inside the halls of power but certainly on the outside too to make sure that our movement stays rounded in that belief.”
