After experiencing strong sales in its existing stores and yielding to consumer demand for more brick-and-mortar locations, Barnes & Noble is working toward a goal of opening 60 new stores across the nation in 2026. The bookseller’s newest reading hotspot? An 11,600-square-foot retail space in Manhattan’s East Village.
Located at 181 Ave. A at the corner of East 11th Street, the new store will occupy the ground floor of the Steiner East Village multi-use building, according to a report by What Now New York. The Barnes & Noble website noted that the location is scheduled to open in November 2026.
According to a report from USA Today, the store opening is part of wider growth for B&N, which now boasts 712 bookstores — a significant increase since dipping below 600 stores in 2023.
“Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful,” the bookstore chain said in a statement. “In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019.”
The company opened dozens of stores in 2025 and plans to open stores in Ohio, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, Washington state, California, Virginia, Georgia and D.C., USA Today reported. Barnes & Noble currently operates one Staten Island store, located in the Staten Island Mall in New Springville.
