GREENWICH VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) – New York City this weekend is a sea of rainbows and purple pride.

But this Pride weekend is not without the usual controversy.

At the start of Pride Weekend, people from all over the world come to the Stonewall Inn to celebrate at the birthplace of the Pride movement, but there were also so many events across the city as well.

The kickoff to Pride weekend in New York City each year is a concert on the TSQ Live stage.

This year, it’s Brooklyn’s very own Strange Neighbors.

“The whole week is a lineup of queer voices, the whole month is,” Joe Papa, senior director of Events and programming for Times Square Alliance, told PIX11 News.

On Saturday,  there’s the Pride run in Central Park, a sold-out event with 8000 runners.

On the west Harlem piers, there’s also a pride event with celebrity guests, food vendors, and live performances.

And on Sunday, more than 2 million spectators are expected to line the March route starting at noon.

It all starts at 25th St. and Fifth Avenue, proceeds south to Eighth Street, travels west, eventually passing the Stonewall National Monument, and ends at 16th and Fifth Avenue.

Among those not marching will be the Police commissioner and the NYPD Gay Officers Action League because, for the fifth year, the Gay officers are not allowed to march in uniform with their guns.

But for so many others, this is a weekend to celebrate.

“In my country, it’s illegal to be gay,” Leilah Babirye, who was born in Uganda, told PIX11 News. “So I wear my rainbow tee shirt here, it is happiness,” she added.

Another woman, born in Mexico, was equally celebratory. “My girlfriend just proposed to me,” Karen Ramirez told PIX11 News.

The organizers of the march, Heritage of Pride, say they continue to work with the NYPD to ensure the safety of all marchers and spectators.
