STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police arrested four men after a loaded gun was tossed out the window of an apartment in New Brighton.

Police and court records identified the defendants as Tyreik Williams, 27, of Hendricks Avenue, Joseph Buxton, 24, of Bowen Street in Clifton, Derrick Butler, 29, of Park Hill Avenue in Clifton, and Elayzia Muhammad, 27, of St. Mark’s Place in St. George. They were arrested during a police response on June 11 at about 6 a.m. in the building where Williams lives on Hendricks Avenue near Jersey Street.

The gun was discovered after a parole officer knocked on the door to visit Williams, according to a law-enforcement source.

Officers who were standing outside the building saw a hand throw something wrapped in a T-shirt out the living room window and onto the ground on Sherman Avenue. The defendants were the only people in the living room at the time, according to the criminal complaint and the source.

Officers recovered the T-shirt and a black Glock .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun with an attached magazine containing three bullets, according to the criminal complaint and the source.

None of the defendants have a license to carry or possess a firearm in New York City or State, according to the criminal complaint.

The defendants were charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Bail initially was set at $250,000 bond/$50,000 cash for Williams, $100,000 bond/$25,000 cash for Buxton, and $75,000 bond/$15,000 cash each for Butler and Muhammad.

Williams, Buxton and Butler are being held at Rikers Island. Muhammad’s status is not available in public records.

The case against the four defendants is in the process of being transferred to state Supreme Court in St. George, with Buxton and Butler scheduled to be arraigned on July 1, according to public records.

Attorney Thomas Reilly, who is defending Muhammad, declined to comment at this time.

Attorneys for the other defendants either were not yet listed in public records or did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Williams was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree in December 2019 in state Supreme Court in St. George. He was sentenced to nine years’ incarceration and five years of post-release supervision.

Buxton was convicted of petit larceny on March 27 and sentenced to a conditional discharge in state Criminal Court in St. George.

Dramatic chase, controversial conviction

Williams’ conviction by a jury in 2019 stemmed from an incident where a loaded gun was tossed against a metal shed. He was living on Broadway in West Brighton when he was arrested on April 17, 2018, at the end of a police chase from Clifton to Concord, according to Advance/SILive.com records.

Officers had seen the butt end of a gun protruding from Williams’ pocket when they encountered him on Palma Drive in Clifton.

Williams ran and an officer chased him into nearby Concord, but briefly lost sight of the defendant after he rounded a corner.

Just before the officer turned the corner himself, he heard the sound of metal clanking against metal.

The cop then saw Williams with his hands up, moving toward the ground.

The officer didn’t find a gun on the defendant when he searched him.

But police did locate a gun with a black handle lying next to a metal storage container in a front yard of a home near the corner of Britton Avenue and Steuben Street.

The weapon was a few feet from where Williams was standing.

Defense lawyer Matthew Zuntag denounced the verdict in 2019.

“When lies like that by the police and specious evidence presented in this case are enough for a conviction, it’s a travesty of justice,” Zuntag said outside court.
