Constellation is working to keep the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Wayne County and the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Oswego County running for years to come.
Officials are making the request to federal regulators to extend their operating license through 2049, and say their four nuclear units in Upstate New York provide nearly half of the state’s clean power and generate millions in tax revenue.
“We commend Governor Hochul and the Public Service Commission for recognizing the unmatched safe, reliable, zero-emission power our upstate nuclear fleet delivers and for taking actions to keep these key assets running,” Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation, said in a statement.
Constellation says maintaining the state’s nuclear fleet will save residents $50 billion and generate millions in tax revenue.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing the request.
