The Yankees have been in a bit of a slump over the last week or so, losing seven of their last 10 games, including the last three to Boston. The teams opened their series on Thursday night at Fenway and the Red Sox picked up a 6-3 win. On Friday, Boston closed the gap with the Yankees in the standings with a 6-1 win and they tacked on one more on Saturday night, winning 4-1 to earn the series victory. Now, the Yankees will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday before heading home for six games.
Gerritt Cole took the loss on Saturday, dropping to 2-3 on the season after pitching for 5.1 innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits. The win went to Jake Bennett, as he threw for 6.1 innings and only gave up one earned run, as Max Schuemann hit a solo shot to center field in the fifth. Boston’s bats were hot on Saturday and the team came away with three extra-base hits to win the game. Masataka Yoshida and Anthony Seigler each blasted home runs, while Willson Contreras hit his 14th double of the season to bring in the final two runs.
The Yankees will look to Carlos Rodón on Sunday night with the hopes of denying Boston from getting on base. The Red Sox will counter with Sonny Gray. Rodón is currently 4-2 on the season with an ERA of 3.70, while Gray is 9-1 with an ERA of 2.95.
