NEW YORK (TNND) — Suspected CEO killer Luigi Mangione is expected to appear in federal court on Monday in Manhattan for a pretrial hearing as attorneys discuss trial preparations and jury selection ahead of his 2027 federal trial.
Mangione faces prosecution by both the state of New York and the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.
He has pleaded not guilty to fatally shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel and could face life in prison if convicted on the federal charges. His state trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 8.
Ahead of Monday’s hearing, sources told ABC News that defense attorneys and federal prosecutors discussed a possible plea deal, but negotiations ended without an agreement.
Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, denied those reports, telling NewsNation that no plea discussions ever took place.
“This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury,” she said.
Mangione’s lawyers also recently notified the court that they intended to pursue a psychiatric defense in the state case, arguing the 28-year-old Ivy League graduate was suffering from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the killing.
They later withdrew that notice before the deadline to turn over his psychiatric records.
