NEW YORK (WABC) — City residents are heading to the polls to decide the next mayor of New York City.
The big question is, how will respond after months of campaigning and President Donald Trump weighing in on the race?
It’s the day the mayoral hopefuls have had their eyes on. It followed a late night of campaigning down to the wire.
New Yorkers will now get their change to pick who they think can move the city forward.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo will be voting at a polling site on the East Side as he goes head to head against his two rivals.
Front-runner Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa also both embarked on quite a day of campaign appearances in the final hours.
Both are hopeful their hard work would pay off.
Mamdani started his day bright and early walking with 100 plus supporters across the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday before giving his closing arguments in Lower Manhattan.
He ended his day canvassing in Astoria, Queens.
Sliwa participated in what he called an election eve blitz making multiple stops in Manhattan, Staten Island, and in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Cuomo got in front of voters in all five boroughs.
But in another twist in the final hours f campaigning, President Trump who has suggested he prefers Cuomo as mayor encouraged New York City voters to get behind him, writing on Truth Social in part
“Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!”
Cuomo is shrugging off the endorsement, referring to Sliwa as a spoiler.
“I agree. A vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani. Curtis Sliwa is not a viable candidate. He cannot win. He is in the race as a spoiler only,” Cuomo said.
“The president is entitled to his point of view, but the people on the ground say they want change, and the change is not Zohran Mamdani it’s Sliwa,” he said.
Sliwa, who has never had the support of President Trump, has defied the calls for him to step aside.
