The polls close in Westchester County—including Croton—at 9 PM this evening. There are five polling stations in the village, and all of them should be sending their voting machine numbers to the Westchester County Board of Elections right after closing time. There they will be tallied and collated, and added to early voting counts as follows:
— The early voting machines have already been returned to the Board’s warehouse in Ardsley. They will be tallied after 9PM on Election Night.
— Results from absentee ballots get uploaded on Election Night. They are counted in the Board’s White Plains office. The Board has been conducting a rolling canvass of absentee, accessible, early vote by mail, special, and federal and military ballots, which continued until yesterday. The scanning of ballots canvassed after Election Day will continue on November 5 in White Plains.
— A post-election audit for Election Day and in-person early voting will take place beginning November 12 in Ardsley and continue until it is completed.
— Other audits will take place after Election Day, including a recanvass of all voting machines, which will begin on November 14 in Ardsley and continue until it is completed.
— Once all this is done, if the margin of victory for any candidate is 20 votes or less, or 0.05% or less, the Board of Elections will conduct a full manual recount of all ballots.

SOON AFTER 9 PM ON ELECTION EVENING, THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS WILL POST UNOFFICIAL RESULTS ON ITS WEBSITE AT THIS LINK.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Please remember that these are unofficial results and that the election is not likely to be officially certified until several weeks after Election Day. As the Board of Elections Website states:
“The election results contained in this web site are the unofficial tally of election results prepared in accordance with Section 9-126 of the New York State Election Law.
Due to multiple transcriptions of voting machine numbers involved in preparing the unofficial tally, all results are subject to error. Furthermore, in accordance with Section 8-142 of the New York State Election Law, some of the absentee votes may not be available for inclusion in the unofficial tally.
On election night, one or more election districts may not report their results. In addition, some reports may include errors which cannot be resolved election night. Official election results will be compiled and made available by the Westchester County Board of Elections in accordance with Section 9-214 of the New York State Election Law no later than twenty-five (25) days after the election.”
All things being equal, Crotonites are likely to have a reasonably good idea of who won the three Board of Trustee seats (including the mayoralty) sooner than last year, when a third of the votes were write-ins (mostly for Voice of Croton, although there were two dozen or so for local businessman Mark Franzoso.)
Unless, that is, one or more of the election battles are very close.
Villagers should also be prepared for the possibility that neither slate, the Croton Democrats or Voice of Croton, will sweep all three open seats. Split votes are likely.
The Chronicle will have news, analysis, and commentary on the preliminary election results as they become available. Stay tuned.
