Two people were killed and at least 20 others were hurt when a bus overturned and crossed into oncoming traffic along the Long Island Expressway in New York, according to authorities.

Emergency crews responded to the scene on Monday night around 11:40 p.m. after the bus hit two cars, as well as the center divider, and then overturned before hitting two other cars.
The bus driver and a passenger were pronounced dead, while dozens of passengers suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious. Many of the wounded were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, with officials aying a driver who as in oncoming traffic is in critical condition.
Authorities did not immediately identify the bus driver and passenger by name, pending notification of their families.
Citing unnamed sources, WABC reported that the driver “has seven prior arrests, including for burglary, sexual abuse and forcible touching.” He was also registered level 2 sex offender, per the media outlet.
The crash forced the closure of portions of the Long Island Expressway for several hours as first responders treated people at the scene and investigators collected evidence.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is working with the New York Police Department to determine what caused the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
