MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — UPDATE:
Classes at SUNY Morrisville are back in session Tuesday after a shooting State Police are calling a “targeted event” that left a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck.
Faculty is asked to be flexible with students who miss classes, citing the “stressful” events of Monday.
Law enforcement will have a presence overnight on campus, as the search for a suspect in Monday’s shooting continues. Police say there is no threat to the public, although many on campus remain on edge.
“All of a sudden we heard the alarm saying this is a lockdown, this is a shelter in place and that this is an emergency” said Paige Novak, a student at SUNY Morrisville. “It’s one of those things that you hear about that you think will never happen to you.”
Most of the campus has been lifted from lockdown, while the South and Onondaga residence halls remain on lockdown as they are searched by law enforcement.
Students in those dorms will spend the night in the Rec Center once cleared to leave their dorms by police.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The New York State Police said one person was injured in a shooting at the residential South Hall at the SUNY Morrisville campus on Monday. Troopers arrived at the scene around 3:45 p.m.
At 5:54 p.m., the state police identified the victim as a 20-year-old man. His was shot in the neck and taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment. His name and condition were not released.
The state police established a command post to process the scene and search nearby areas. Members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Uniformed Services, Special Operations Response Team and K9 units are on scene assisting with the investigation.
The state police did not announce any arrests or descriptions of a suspect.
Governor Kathy Hochul posted on X that she is monitoring the situation.
“I have been briefed on the shooting on campus at SUNY Morrisville,” said Governor Hochul. “New York State Police are assisting local law enforcement and SUNY leadership as they respond to this situation. The campus remains on lockdown until further notice.”
SUNY Morrisville initiated a lockdown following reports of the shooting first coming out. A campus-wide emergency alert instructed students to shelter in place as law enforcement searched the area. The lockdown remains in effect as of 5:54 p.m. on Monday.
The state police said no other people were injured in the shooting and there is no indication of further harm to the campus community.
University Police at SUNY Morrisville and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office are aiding with the investigation.
