NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — New York City will activate a Code Red alert on Wednesday due to extreme heat, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
Temperatures are expected to linger in the high 90s and low 100s throughout the holiday weekend. Humidity will make the temperatures feel as high as 112 degrees, Mamdani said.

“The most powerful tool we have this week is not a forecast or a cooling center, it is a New Yorker knocking on a neighbor’s door to make sure that they are ok,” said NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell.

What is a code red in NYC?
A code red is declared when temperatures are forecasted to reach 91 or higher for two consecutive days or more.
During the Code Red, shelters and hospitals will accept anyone looking to cool down. Shelter suspensions will not be carried out, and shelters will store clients’ belongings.
The city will deploy cooling vans and open cooling centers.

Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers to call 311 if they see someone in need of a cooling refuge.
Extended pool and beach hours
The Gantry Plaza State Park spraypad will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The indoor and outdoor pools at Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. with some breaks in between, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.
