ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – Tuesday is Election Day, with voters across the country taking up a wealth of issues at the state and local levels.
In New York’s North Country, we’re watching the special election for a state Assembly seat.
Following the resignation of Billy Jones earlier this year, Democratic candidate and current Plattsburgh Town Manager Michael Cashman faces Republican Brent Davison. Davison is a retired New York State Police commander.
The seat is only a one-year gig to finish up Jones’s remaining term.
Both candidates say repealing the HALT Act, which partly did away with solitary confinement to prevent brutality toward inmates, is among their top priorities.
They disagree on medical aid in dying, which is on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk. Davison is against it while Cashman supports it.
Also on the ballot in New York, a constitutional amendment involving hundreds of acres of land at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
It’s meant to rectify legal issues with upgrades to the historic site’s parking lot, hiking trails and facilities.
The proposed amendment asks voters to approve any future land alterations on more than 300 acres of land in the mountain.
In return, the state would put roughly 2,500 acres back into the forest preserve of at least equal value.
