The attacker wanted for raping a 13-year-old girl in a Bronx park has been busted, police said Wednesday.
Abundio Hernandez Canto, 36, surrendered to police in Yonkers, where he lives, after seeing his photo in media reports, police said.
He was then turned over to the NYPD Monday, police said, and charged with rape, acting in a manner injurious to child less than 17, sexual misconduct and sexual abuse.
Hernandez Cantu pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was then let go on supervised released, in accordance with a request from the office of the Bronx district attorney.
A source familiar with the incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. on June 23, said the victim was not followed off a bus and then dragged into Van Cortlandt Park, as she initially told police.
The teen, who has mental health issues, met the suspect on the Bx9 bus, and when asked how old she was, told the suspect she was several years older, putting her past the age of consent, the source said.
She got off the bus with the suspect at Broadway and W. 261st St., in North Riverdale, then entered the park with him, the source said.
But when she indicated she did not want to have sex, Hernandez Cantu allegedly raped her.
The suspect ran off. Medics rushed the victim to a local hospital for treatment.
Police three days later released to the media bus surveillance photos of the suspect wearing a light-colored hoodie.
Police said Hernandez Cantu has no arrest record in the city.
