Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s reported Madison Square Garden wedding, shutting down a chunk of Midtown for the Fourth of July weekend, is eliciting almost as many questions as it is guests (the latter ostensibly topping one thousand).
But how exactly is the world’s biggest pop star, billions of dollars and streams aside, able to swing such a logistical feat right beside Penn Station? And on a holiday weekend, no less?
A city official confirmed to the Daily News last week that a permit had been filed for Thursday to midday Saturday in order to close the streets around The Garden, where an entertainment company would then establish a tent intended for around 900 people. TMZ reported last month that the couple — celebrating their third anniversary this month — would no longer be marrying mid-month at Rhode Island’s Ocean House, but over Independence Day Weekend at The World’s Most Famous Arena. The festivities are reportedly phone-free.

During a police presser pertaining to 4th of July events, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch spoke very briefly about the Swift wedding but didn’t give anything away.
“In a briefing about major events I would be remiss not to mention an event we are tracking at Madison Square Garden,” said Tisch. “The NYPD will have a detail in place, but we not going to go into more specifics than that.”
During the presser, Mayor Mamdani was asked if “a billionaire should be responsible to pay security for her own event” but he ducked the question, allowing Tisch to speak about drones first, then moving onto the next question. (On Tuesday, the Mayor urged anyone marrying at MSG this weekend, and “all New Yorkers,” to “stay inside and stay cool” amid the heatwave or heat dome, expected to break Saturday night.)

Officials were asked about whether the city planned to implement heavy weapons teams, drone mitigation, or counter terror cops for the event — given one of Swift’s 2024 Eras Tour shows in Vienna was the subject of a foiled terror plot.
Tisch said that, as with all high-profile events, the NYPD counterterrorism unit will be conducting an assessment of the dangers to the MSG event.
“We will have the appropriate resources based on their threat assessment on that specific private event,” she said.

Roughly two or three officers stood on sidewalks on the perimeter of MSG shortly after 3 p.m., along with a couple of a NYPD cars spotted on 33rd near 8th. The News learned that a larger group of cops and NYPD brass gathered outside the venue earlier Wednesday.
Later, there were reports that well over 100 cops were present at 30th and 7th around 2:45 p.m.
That contingent was supposed to include at least one inspector and one captain, as well as a lieutenant, a pair of sergeants, and 20 officers. That’s in addition to those from other commands and working straight time, which would have included four lieutenants, 12 sergeants, and 100 officers.

A former NYPD source told the Daily News that, on the high end — including benefits — a cop could make around $800 a day, which could mean an estimated $111,000 a day for all NYPD working the event. That figure would not include the cost of the captain nor the inspector.
Elinor Picek, an Upper West Sider who works as a server, told The News she’d stopped by to “see what’s happening,” having gotten word of people “in Taylor Swift shirts by the loading docks.”
“I probably will try to come by and see what’s going on [on Friday],” said the longtime Swift fan, 23. “I think it’s a really amazing thing to see somebody who talks about the idealistic version of love and romance and all that stuff, but then also talks about the dark parts of it too, is finally getting her happy story and happy ending. I think that’s a really cool thing to see.”

Per a police source, the couple will enjoy a rehearsal in the MSG theater Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., followed by Friday’s cocktail hour, wedding, and reception — the latter of which will also take place in the theater. The festivities that day will span 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
VIP guests will be shielded by the large tent as they enter through 31st St. Though they’ll also enter through 33rd St., it’s unclear whether a tent will be present there.
