NEW YORK (WABC) – Authorities in New York say human remains were discovered inside the chimney of a school in Queens on Tuesday morning.
Police said they received a 911 call regarding possible remains found at P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo after a janitor reported smelling a foul odor coming from the chimney.
Upon arrival, investigators confirmed locating human remains.
Authorities said that an exterminator was first called to investigate and found a shoe and what appeared to be a person’s foot before officers were contacted.
Officials said no students or staff were present at the time, with school being let out for the summer last week, but there has been ongoing construction.
The school has been closed for repair work over the summer, so it has mainly just been contractors present, officials noted.
Detectives said they are checking with contractors to see if they know anything and whether any of their people are missing.
Authorities said the medical examiner’s office will determine the person’s identity and cause of death.
