Knickerbocker Aquatic Center opens on a steamy day in Troy

As temperatures soared, the new Knickerbocker Aquatic Center opened to swimmers Thursday in Troy, providing them a chance to escape the heat.

The facility features an eight-lane Olympic-size pool, three splash pads, a pool deck with seats and a pool house. It replaces the former Knickerbacker Pool, which closed 10 years ago.

Construction began last year. There is also a handicap-accessible, zero-depth walking entrance into the pool, which will  be open from 1-6 p.m. every day. Admission is free to city residents.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area and city will staff the site. 

Mayor Carmella Mantello called it an exciting day for Lansingburgh and the entire city. 

“This is an investment in our kids healthier families and investing in ‘Burgh and an investment in Troy’s future,” she said.

The estimated cost of the center came in at over $7.2 million, with funding coming through the American Rescue Plan Act and a New York Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS) grant.
