CAYUGA COUNTY, N.Y. — New York State Police arrested a Cayuga County sheriff’s deputy from Auburn on Friday following an investigation into what authorities described as an inappropriate relationship with a minor.
Hunter Lawrence, 25, of Auburn, was arrested on July 3rd after investigators determined he engaged in multiple sexual encounters over an extended period of time with a victim under the age of 17, according to state police. Authorities said the incidents occurred while the victim was at different ages, leading to multiple charges under New York state law.
Lawrence is employed as a deputy with the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said there are no allegations the conduct occurred while he was on duty.
State police said they worked closely with Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck after he was notified of the allegations.
Lawrence was charged with two counts of second-degree rape, two counts of third-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was processed and transported to the Cortland County Jail for centralized arraignment.
The investigation remains ongoing.
