ROCHESTER, N.Y. — State Police are cracking down on drunk driving this holiday weekend.
Troopers say make sure you have a safe way to get home and designate a sober driver or use a ride share if you’re going to drink. Troopers are working with local law enforcement to run checkpoints across the state.
Troopers will also be on the lookout for drivers using their phones. Last year, more than 10,000 people got a ticket. The average arrest for drinking and driving costs about $10,000.
According to police, drunk drivers cause over 17,000 deaths annually, and over 30% of deadly crashes are linked to alcohol in New York State.
