NEW YORK (WABC) — New York City’s voters are deciding on Tuesday who should be the next mayor to run the nation’s largest city.

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral nominee, said he did not vote for himself on the democratic line. Former governor Andrew Cuomo spent Election Day telling voters to do what President Trump says, the man he vows to stand up to if elected. The Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa, did not bow to pressure to drop out and continued running hard on Tuesday.

Mamdani is setting the stage for his administration should he emerge victorious tonight, posting a video of Senator Bernie Sanders greeting him as the city’s next mayor.

Mamdani also showed some levity when asked about is inexperience and age.

“I get older everyday,” he said, before turning serious.

“President Trump also encouraged New Yorkers to vote for Andrew Cuomo. There are many things he will say and do that will not best out in the results in our own city,” he said.

Cuomo meanwhile tried to create some distance between himself and President Trump while also trying to benefit from his endorsement.

“The president does not support me. The president opposes Zohran Mamdani. The president believes Zohran Mamdani is a communist. He believes he is an existential threat,” he said.

The independent candidate also flashed a sense of humor as he cast his ballot on the East Side when someone asked who he was voting for.

“I’m still deciding,” he said, then turning to his right flank invoking the President to fend off the republican candidate. “He is saying that a vote for Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani, which is true. The president is nothing if not pragmatic.”

Curtis Sliwa meanwhile insisted he is not in the race to play spoiler.

CeFaan Kim reports from the Upper West Side.

“I’m sure if the president were still voting in New York City, where he grew up, he’d be voting for Cuomo. That’s fine. I don’t think he understands the dynamics in the streets and in the subways. He’s no longer here,” Sliwa said.

Down the stretch, Sliwa has been framing this election as a choice between himself and Mamdani.

“My campaign has stood in stark contrast to Andrew Cuomo. This is not going to be an election determined by the powers that be,” he said. “Andrew Cuomo needs to go back, hide under his rock in the Hamptons with his billionaire friends.”

Polls are open in New York City until 9:00 p.m.
