NEW YORK, NY (WCBS/CNN) – An 18-year-old is in custody, accused of shooting and wounding a New York police officer.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man approached four officers in an unmarked police vehicle a little after 4 a.m. July 5.
The commissioner said officers exited their vehicle and attempted to engage with him, resulting in three officers firing their weapons.
The suspect was eventually taken down by officers with a stun gun after a foot chase.
Detective Robert Karroll was shot in the back but was wearing a bulletproof vest and was left with a bruised back.
A second officer had facial and shoulder bruises.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Karrol had been working a 12-hour shift for the holiday.
Mamdani also praised all of New York’s police officers and said he was grateful the incident didn’t carry more grave consequences. In a separate nearby incident, eight people, including four children, were shot during a cookout in Brooklyn on Saturday.
