Emergency crews continue working to stabilize the structurally compromised high-rise in Midtown, where damaged columns forced evacuations and street closures around the former Pfizer building on East 42nd Street.
Officials have made significant progress securing the building after compromised columns were discovered on the 21st floor, reducing concerns about an immediate collapse.
Even so, investigators are still working to determine what caused the structural failure and what comes next for the residential conversion project.
Rick Chandler, who served as New York City’s buildings commissioner for much of the 2010s, joined “Mornings On 1” to discuss the engineering challenges, the investigation into what went wrong and the safety measures still in place.
