ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The New York State Unified Court System (UCS) is banning a new accessory: smart glasses. The ban goes into effect on July 20.
A memo was released on July 1 announcing the ban. It said the court system was prohibiting smart glasses to prevent recording of court proceedings, which is against New York State Civil Rights Law and applicable court rules.

The ban applies to “eyewear or headwear containing a camera, microphone, computer or other technology that permit the user to record video or audio,” whether the glasses are prescription or non-prescription.
Anyone who has smart glasses will not be allowed in a UCS facility unless they are given to uniformed personnel while the owner is in the facility.

The ban applies to anyone entering court facilities, including UCS employees, litigants,
attorneys, witnesses, family members, or anyone who wants to “enter a UCS facility for any reason.”
There are over 1,240 courts across 62 counties in the New York State Unified Court System which is comprised of trial courts, appellate divisions, and nearly 1,200 town and village courts.
