The city of Syracuse is giving residents a look at its plans for the James Street Improvement Project.
At a hearing Wednesday, the city said the project will replace utility service lines along with making safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. The road will also be resurfaced.
City officials say they hope to start construction in the spring of 2028 and finish work within two years.
The project is expected to cost $40 million.
Local leaders say 80 percent of the project will be covered by federal funds, with the remaining 20% being split between the state and city.
“The roadway needs to be repaved, so we’re trying to make it more accommodating for pedestrians bicyclist, safer for traffic,” city engineer Mary Robison said. “Also, the water main needs to be replaced.”
