It’s almost time to tie up your laces for the 49th Boilermaker Road Race. Since its inaugural year in 1978, the race has grown to welcome people across the state and the nation. The post-race party is a huge celebration that draws in 30,000 to 40,000 people.
Fred Matt, president, CEO and fourth-generation owner of the FX Matt Brewing Company in Utica, says there’s a team of people who work to prepare for the post-race party.
“We will pour 350 kegs of beer, which is roughly 70,000 cups of beer,” Matt said. “We’re serving ‘Weekend Warrior,’ which is a 3% alcohol mid-strength beer. It’s full-flavored, but less alcohol. And so you can enjoy beer but not have the whole alcohol impact of a beer.”
Matt said this event is an exciting way to showcase what the Mohawk Valley has to offer, along with refreshing beer.
“It’s just great to be a part of a huge event that is celebrating our community,” said Matt.
And aside from the beer at the post-race party, the Boilermaker has a substantial economic impact not only in the city of Utica but also in Oneida County.
“We know our hotels are at 87% occupancy. At least that’s looking at 2025 data, reports that we’re able to pull. That’s a 9% increase from the previous four weeks of that year,” said Sarah Foster-Calero, president of Oneida County Tourism.
She says people who are traveling in for the event are spending time and money in the area.
“Restaurant spending increases 29% during that time. It’s also now coinciding with Oneida County Restaurant Week this year. So it’s like the perfect excuse — go out, support these local restaurants. Oneida County is known for food,” said Foster-Calero.
Race day is Sunday, July 12.
