CLAY, New York (WWNY) – The foundation has been poured for what is expected to be the largest semiconductor manufacturing plant in the United States, located in the town of Clay.
The milestone marks the latest step in the construction of Micron Technology’s $100 billion facility, which sits approximately 40 miles from the Jefferson County border. Officials said construction is running several months ahead of schedule since the project broke ground earlier this year.
The plant is expected to bring around 50,000 jobs to the region and attract tens of thousands of workers to central and northern New York.
Gov. Kathy Hochul spoke at the event, citing the project’s broader economic significance.
“We’re also laying the foundation for a resurgence of American industry, manufacturing, and the whole semiconductor revolution, and it’s happening here,” Hochul said. “This is the epicenter of this. So I’m so proud that this will be creating businesses and supply chain opportunities. Creating jobs for generations to come.”
The first plant is expected to be completed in four years, though Micron officials said that timeline could be shortened given the current pace of construction.
