In Orange County, town of Newburgh leaders are considering action this week against a potential new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
The town board is set to bring up the issue at its regular meeting on Monday.
It comes soon after public government data came to light showing ICE has leased a warehouse on 800 Corporate Boulevard.
The board has a resolution on its agenda in direct opposition to ICE’s use of the warehouse if the site is used as a processing or detention center.
Spectrum News 1 has reached out to ICE for more information on how the facility would be used.
This follows a similar back-and-forth over a potential ICE facility earlier this year in Chester, which is also in Orange County.
ICE officials pulled back on plans to use the former Pep Boys warehouse in that community.
Meanwhile, these are not the only immigration detention facility discussed for upstate New York. The Department of Homeland Security says it is building a new detention facility at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia.
There are also plans to place an ICE detention facility inside the Kenneth B. Keating Building in downtown Rochester.
