Northeastern Launches First Out-Of-State University in New York City With Full Suite of Undergraduate Programs

Northeastern University has formally opened Northeastern University – New York City, the first out-of-state university campus in New York City to offer a full suite of undergraduate programs across multiple disciplines.

The campus is based at the former Marymount Manhattan College site on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, following a merger that is being implemented in phases under state and federal regulatory oversight.

Marymount Manhattan, a long-standing liberal arts institution, now serves as the physical home of Northeastern University – New York City, with existing Marymount students being moved into aligned Northeastern programs while keeping their original tuition structure, according to Northeastern.

Northeastern has said that students enrolled at Marymount at the time of the merger will ultimately graduate with Northeastern degrees once the transition is fully completed.

As Northeastern’s newest comprehensive undergraduate campus, the New York City site joins Boston, London, and Oakland as part of the university’s growing global undergraduate network.

The campus enrolled its first cohort of roughly 300–350 New York City Scholars in fall 2025, with those first-year students living and studying in Manhattan alongside Marymount’s incoming class.

Northeastern is now expanding the program with additional first-year cohorts planned for fall 2026, supported by a dedicated NYC Scholars curriculum and guaranteed university housing in the second year, The Monitor MMC reported.

Under the New York City Scholars model, students begin their studies at the Manhattan campus and then transition into Northeastern’s wider network, including the Boston campus and other global locations, after completing their first year.

The curriculum is being built out across communications, the arts, and other fields, with course offerings already listed for the 2026 academic year.

Northeastern officials say the campus is designed to connect students to New York’s economic and cultural sectors, including media, finance, technology, health care, and performing arts, through the university’s established cooperative education and experiential learning approach, as per Inside Higher ED.
