NEW YORK (WBNG) — Gov. Kathy Hochul says she is pressing federal officials for more information after reports surfaced about multiple immigration detention projects being planned in New York.
On Sunday, July 12, the governor sent a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin seeking answers about three separate sites reportedly linked to federal immigration detention.
According to the governor’s office, the projects are tied to Rochester, Batavia, and Newburgh, even as DHS has previously said it would coordinate with local communities.
The letter also refers to President Trump’s pledge that ICE operations in New York would not be expanded unless Hochul requested it.
In the message, Hochul calls for greater transparency, saying it’s necessary for the safety and security of New Yorkers and urging DHS to scale back what she described as aggressive actions toward law-abiding residents.
New Yorkers, like all Americans, deserve honest answers about what their federal government is doing in their communities. And I demand your department provide that transparency.
Additional information, along with a full copy of the letter, can be found by visiting the governor’s website.
