MANHATTAN (KSNT) – A free community event designed to help Manhattan residents get rid of unwanted furniture, or find some new additions for their homes, is coming up in the Little Apple.

Lauren Lohfink, a marketing specialist with the City of Manhattan, said in a press release that Furniture Amnesty Day is coming later this month. Manhattan residents can participate in the free community event which starts when registration opens at 8 a.m. on Friday, July 24 at the A2 parking lot on the southeast corner of campus at Kansas State University. People can then go shopping for free in 15-minute time slots from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lohfink said the event gives people the chance to donate or pick up furniture at no cost. She said the event is open to the public and there are no income requirements or forms that need to be signed by those wanting to donate pieces of furniture.

“Furniture Amnesty Day is a great way for Manhattan residents to help their neighbors by donating household furniture they no longer need,” said Justin Befort, plans examiner I in Risk Reduction for the Manhattan Fire Department. “It also helps keep reusable items out of the landfill and gives people an easy, organized way to clean up their properties and improve the look of their neighborhoods. It is a valuable community service that promotes cleanliness, safety, and civic pride throughout the city.”

Participants are invited to return at their scheduled time and take home up to five furniture items at no cost, according to the City of Manhattan. Furniture pieces that come in a set, such as a table and chairs, only count as one item.

Lohfink said furniture will continue to arrive at the event throughout the day, giving participants a fresh selection of items to choose from. People must be able to haul away any furniture they want to take home as delivery services will not be provided. Participants can donate furniture using one of the following methods:

Residents within city limits can sign up online by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22 to have volunteers pick up their donated furniture at the curbside of their home.

People can drop off donations at the A2 parking lot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 24.

Volunteers are available to take away furniture donations at the curb for anyone who lives within Manhattan’s city limits, according to the City of Manhattan. Volunteers will only pick up a total of five furniture items per location.

People interested in signing up for the pickup service can sign up by clicking here or by calling the Manhattan City Manager’s Office at 785-587-2404 during business hours. All furniture pieces that are marked for donation pickups need to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Friday, July 24.

Lohfink said any furniture left at the event by 4 p.m. on July 24 will be open to the public without registration with Furniture Amnesty Day ending by 4:30 p.m. on the same day. All leftover pieces of furniture will be taken away by staff and volunteers.
